Big Ideas: What is human nature?

Reading: Today we will read for five minutes. Your next book review will be on November 9th.

Agenda:

1. Today is our class discussion. I will be grading some of you today and others on Friday. Remember your grade is entirely dependent on the quality of your comments during discussion.
2. Post your group's TQEs on the class Padlet.

Success Criteria:

1. I have a good understanding of the characters.
2. I can visualize the island.
3. I can make predictions about future events.

Reading the first chapter of The Lord of the Flies

Big Ideas: What is human nature?

Reading: Today we will read for five minutes. Your next book review will be on November 9th.

Agenda:

1. We will start a unit on narrative writing. This unit is something new I am trying. So we will go on this adventure together.
1. We will start with a short narrative called The Rose.
2. You will find the activities for this narrative in GOOGLE CLASSROOM.
2. You should be reading chapter one of The Lord of the Flies. You will each have your own copy.
1. You need to finish chapter 1 (which is 30 pages) by Wednesday.
2. You will need to take LEFT side and RIGHT side notes to prepare for our discussion.
3. In your LEFT side notes, list all of the main characters introduced at the beginning of the novel. What is each one like? Draw a little picture of the island. What should you include?
4. Find quotes that you think demonstrate what a character is like. Write the page number next to that character's name.

Success Criteria:

1. I finished half of my vocabulary.
2. I can name the nine components of a narrative.
3. I can describe the main characters and the island.
4. I can generate high-level questions based on what I read.

Homework:

1. Work on your vocabulary.
2. Read chapter 1 by Wednesday. Be ready to discuss.

Lord of the Flies: The Beginning

Big Ideas: What is human nature?

Reading: Fill out the reading progress form.

Agenda:

1. Today I will grade 50% of your vocabulary. Your full vocabulary unit is due by next Monday.

Robinsonade notes

Big Ideas: How do individuals and groups shape our identity? How do we become a confident individual?

Reading: Fill out the reading progress form. You will read for ten minutes.

Agenda:

1. Finish your summary for your Cornell notes. The summary should be detailed and high quality. You should have questions and highlights in your notes. You will turn in your notes to the guest teacher. The only day you can get credit for your notes is today!
2. Work on your vocabulary. Remember that 50% is due on Monday. You can listen to music if you want to.

1. Today we will finish our Robinsonade notes. You are responsible for adding questions and summarizing your notes.
2. We will play a Quizlet Live! game based on our notes.

Success Criteria:

1. I can explain what a robinsonade is.
2. I can explain why robinsonade stories changed.
3. I can describe different views of human nature.
