First Book Review

Reading: Fill out the reading progress form.


Agenda:

  1. Begin working on your first book review. Use the sentence frames on the blog. Click on the Independent Reading link on the right-hand side of the blog.
  2. I will come around and grade your vocabulary.
  3. Go to the library and check out your textbooks.
  4. Continue working on your book review.
  5. Read Stargirl so that you have less homework. You will have a quiz on Monday. You need to read to page 96.
    1. Listen to the audio up to 2:16:00
    2. Read the the PDF up to page 69

Success Criteria:
  1. I finished my first book review.
  2. I finished my 50% of my vocabulary.
  3. I started reading the next section of Stargirl.

  1. Finish reading Stargirl.
  2. Work on your vocabulary.
  3. Choose your second book.

No one likes Stargirl

Reading: Today we will read for five minutes. What trouble has been brewing in your book?

Agenda:
  1. More participle practice. Today you will write a description of people watching fireworks. You will then go back and add a participle to each sentence.
  2. Add to Conversational Roundtable. What other groups are we a part of?
    1. One group that shapes our behavior is...For example,...The novel Stargirl also provides examples. For instance,...I think this type of influence has a ___ effect on people. When people...
    2. Now choose another group that shapes our behavior.
  3. Fill out graph for Hot Seat. How did this event affect Stargirl's popularity? How does the Valentine affect Leo?
  4. Read Stargirl for 17 minutes. Start at 1:42:00 and end at 1:59:00 minutes(p85).        Read the the PDF up to page 60

Success Criteria:
  1. I can write sentences that use a participle at the beginning.
  2. I can explain how groups shape us in life and in the novel.
  3. I can analyze how popular Stargirl is at this point in the novel.
  4. I understand what is happening in the novel.

Homework:

  1. Work on your new vocabulary. You will have two weeks to complete it since Monday is a holiday.

  1. Work on Stargirl Plot Analysis in GOOGLE CLASSROOM. We will focus on the second column "Rising Action"
    1. Stargirl as a cheerleader.
    2. The conflict between Hillari and Stargirl (birthday, Cinnamon, etc.)
    3. Where should we put Archie Brubaker from chapter 7? How does he fit into the novel?
    4. Stargirl becomes really popular in chapter 8
    5. Stargirl does things that make her unpopular (funeral, pledge, etc.)

  1. Class discussion: Who has more influence: Stargirl or Hilari?
    1. Not all individuals are equal. Some individuals have more influence than others. So what do you think?

  2. English Journal #5 Participle Practice
    1. , the heavily armed soldiers looked dangerous.
  3. Make a claim using the roundtable and add it to English Journal #4

  5. Chart Stargirl's popularity after today's reading. What changed?

  1.  I can make a claim about a character in the novel and provide evidence.
  2. I know what a participle usually looks like and how to add it to the beginning of a sentence.
  3.  I am deepening my knowledge about how individuals and groups shape me.
  4. I understand how popular Stargirl is in the novel and why.
  5. I am making progress on my vocabulary.

Reading: Today you will read for ten minutes, while I check your vocabulary assignment.

Agenda:

  1. Grade your vocabulary.
  2. English Journal #4 Making a claim about the conflict in Stargirl
    1. Make a claim about the book using our graph and Padlet wall.
      1. Check Friday's blog for the Padlet wall for your period.
    2. At this point in the book, the main problem is...When Stargirl first arrived at Micah High School,...However, after the two football games...
    3. Make sure your paragraph describes how she is different, why she causes problems at Mica High, and how her popularity fluctuates.
    4. Finally, make a claim about Archie Brubaker. Why does the author include him in the book? What evidence can you give? page 30.
  3. Create a practice Flipgrid
    1. Sign-up for Flipgrid using your Google account.
    2. Show the cover of your book and tell what is currently happening.

  3. Padlet with what makes Stargirl strange.

  4. Start on the graph of how popular Stargirl is at the moment
    1. Fold a piece of paper into 8 squares (3 folds)
    2. In the first square make a graph. The Y-axis should say "Popularity". The X-axis should have two values "Leo" "Mica High"
    3. Using the numbers 1-10 graph how popular Stargirl is with Leo and Mica High.
  5. Read Stargirl for 17 minutes. Start at 34 end at 51 minutes. (p37) Read the the PDF up to page 26
  6. Finish your posters from Wednesday.

Success Criteria:
  1. I can explain what makes Stargirl different.
  2. I am able to analyze how popular Stargirl is with Leo and the rest of the high school.

  1. I can summarize Music for My Mother and describe who is being shaped in the narrative.
  2. I can categorize words that describe people who are a rainbow in another person's clouds.
  3. I can identify the conflict at the beginning of Stargirl.

Our First iTime

Reading: Today we will read for 10 minutes.

Agenda:
  1. iTime: A Rainbow in the Clouds
    1. Take a moment and think of someone who has shown you kindness. How did they make you feel cared for or noticed?
    2. What are the qualities people have who show us kindness and make us feel supported?
      1. Period 1
      2. Period 6
    3. Watch video about being a Rainbow in Someone's Cloud.
    4. Should other words be added?
    5. Everyone in life will experience clouds. We want to make sure we also think of the rainbows.
    6. You will work in pairs and try to group the words from our word cloud into categories. No more than 7 categories.
    7. Think of a way you can be a rainbow for someone else.

    8. These will form our "House Rules"

    Building Capacities

    Big Idea: What is this class all about?
    1. What are the capacities of a literate individual?
      1. Today we will cover the first capacity: Independence.
        1. Open your English Journal. Start a new entry. Title it “Independence and Quote Sandwich”
        2. Share your English Journal with your random partner for today. 
        3. In a separate color, each of you must write a sentence that explains what independence means using the definition below. 
        4. Your sentences must have the number of words I assigned you in class. 
        5. Next, create a new page on your Google Site called “My Capacities”
        6. Add the two sentences you came up with.

    Welcome Back to School

    Hello and Welcome to Beaumont High School!




    We're going to have a fantastic year of learning together, and that means we have a lot to do today. The first thing to know is that this blog will be where we start each day, and it will link you to everything else you will need for our class. We're very excited to get to know all of you, so let's get started!
