Chapter 11 Discussion

Big Ideas: What is human nature?

Reading: Today we will read for 5 minutes. If you get here early you will have extra time to read.

Agenda:

  1. Meet in your small groups. Push the discussion deeper and open the book frequently.
  2. Here are the standards for a class discussion:
    1. Come to discussions prepared, having read and understood material under study; explicitly draw on that preparation by referring to evidence from texts and other research on the topic or issue to stimulate a thoughtful, well-reasoned exchange of ideas.
    2. Propel conversations by posing and responding to questions that relate the current discussion to broader themes or larger ideas; actively incorporate others into the discussion; and clarify, verify, or challenge ideas and conclusions.
    3. Today we will end small group with a "One Last Word" opportunity for each person to say something.
  3. I will be checking your notes on Thursday.
  4. Submit your group's best TQEs.
    1. Period 1
    2. Period 6
  5. Try to use the sentence frames below.

Success Criteria:
  1. I can identify Golding's most important words and sentences.
  2. I can ask questions that deepen a conversation.
  3. I can learn from my classmates.
  4. I frequently invited someone to talk who doesn't usually participate in the discussion.

Homework:
  1. Your next book review will be TBD.
  2. You should be working on finishing your SAT letter D vocabulary.
